National Food & Drink Training (NFDT), the training arm of trade association Scottish Bakers, is delighted to be supporting Hamilton based Cakes by Rebecca to grow the business, by investing in skills and training.
Cakes by Rebecca is the brainchild of 24 year old Rebecca Henderson who's love for baking was ignited at age 16, after watching episodes of Cake Boss on TV, which inspired her to enrol in a cupcake making course.
At 18, she started making cake slices and selling them in her father's fresh food shop in Hamilton, during which time she had started her studies in Business and Hospitality Management. She went on to graduate with a degree a few years later from UWS. By this time Rebecca's cake business was taking off, supplying a few local deli's and food shops, building up a loyal customer base through her innovative quality products and social media activity.
Rebecca opened a modern bespoke bakery unit in Blantyre in July 2019. The unit is hard to miss, with its impressive sky blue and navy facia and large heart shape logo that fronts the bakery, inviting customers in to The Bake Shop, which sells a mouth-watering range of baked confectionery Thursday to Sunday, when it is open to the public.
Cakes by Rebecca now supplies a range of pre pack cake slices to over 100 independent stores across Scotland. Rebecca now employs over 20 staff and has three very busy vans delivering a delicious range of cakes to customer's five days a week.
With a wide range of hand crafted celebration cakes, gourmet luxury cakes and hand held cakes on offer, Rebecca says,
"Cakes are my real passion and I take great delight and pride in hand baking and decorating each cake to individual customer requirements. Every cake is hand crafted by me personally and tailored to offer something truly unique that not only looks fabulous, but tastes fabulous. The cakes are produced in my purpose built commercial kitchen, that has been given full approval by the FSA (Food Standards Agency).
"But it's not just about cakes, it's also about building a businesses. I am always looking to the future and I see staff training and development as a key part of my strategy for future growth. Investing in training is vital and teaming up with a good training provider even more so."
With the support of National Food and Drink Training advisors, Cakes by Rebecca currently has two staff members working towards an SVQ in Craft Bakery, which will improve skills and knowledge and put Cakes by Rebecca in a great place.
National Food and Drink Training (NFDT) was established in 2015 as a rebrand of Scottish Bakers training provision. This was a direct result of the strengthening of its portfolio to include lean manufacturing techniques and the delivery of the new Food Manufacturing Excellence (FME) qualifications.
